We drove back to Portugal from Seville Spain to Mertola. We stayed two nights in Mertola at the Hotel Museu. The hotel is near the main area of town and overlooks the Guadiana River. The hotel room was small but modern and had a view of the river and the carpark.
Mertola is a fortified medieval town that overlooks a calm river with a hilltop castle.
During our time here we walked around the town, took in the castle views, visited a couple of the historical sites in the town and we took a drive to a nearby town and site of an abandoned pyrite and copper mine called Sao Domingo and a nearby river beach.
It was very hot while in Mertola, daytime highs in the low to mid-thirties, so we enjoyed the hotel outside deck and pool that overlooks the river.
